Our town in the news

[fr]

Un homme qui habitait notre ville vient de se suicider dans une chatroom et personne dans la chatroom ne l′en a empêché; au contraire ils l′ont encouragé à le faire! A-t-on vraiment oublié que derrière chaque écran il y a une personne?

[en]

Can’t believe what I read in the paper the other day! A man who lived here in our town committed suicide: he hanged himself while others watched! That is shocking enough! The details make it worse. It all happened in a chatroom where people meet up to “insult” (?) each other! The man said he was depressed and that he was going to end it all! And the others just egged him on! The man just got up and did it!
Have we become this insensitive that we can just sit and not stop somebody threatening suicide! Do we see our screen as protection and the net as a place populated with people who don’t have feelings or even don’t really exist?
Of course I have seen this sort of uncaring attitude, not as bad but still a bit too often actually, in my dealings with people through my various groups. People asking for help and not a please or thank you. Only yesterday, a man wanted me to unsubscribe him. His mail was just: “Remove me from list” in capital letters, nothing else! I bet he does not talk like this in real life!
However seeing it does not make it acceptable yet for me and I still mentally note “That is rude”!
The suicide in the chatroom is on another level! But it still shows how indifferent some of us have become -as if on the net we are not dealing with real people! These people were cruel enough to encourage him and only called the police after the event! The only thing I can think of is people thought he was joking!
But if we are on the net and don’t see people’s faces, I think we should be very very careful of what we write in reaction to what’s being said. We maybe joking but is the other person too?

Back & New Theme

[fr]

De retour! Re visite de la maison d′Anne Frank mais sans me presser cette fois-ci. A fait super beau! Fête des Mères dimanche ici. Nouveau look finalement!

[en]

We are back! It’s been great going away for a few days and the weather has been superb all the time we were away! Of course I went back to Anne Frank’s house and this time it was much better because it wasn’t busy at all and you had time to read, listen and look. It’s very sad visiting there, and despite all the evidence there, so hard to believe that so many people lived through such atrocities.
And a big thank you to Mimika of Mimika’s ArtRoom who has been so helpful with making several headers for me.
Mother’s day here in the UK on Sunday. Kim can’t make it because they booked a weekend away before realizing it was Mothering Sunday. LOL! Still, she is back soon for a long break over Easter.
